Legal Hacking - Type of Access

Access to the company network and systems can be provided by different means. Today, most companies protect their Internet connection by means of a firewall. The test that occurs most frequently uses this network connection either from the public Internet through the firewall or from the local company network. Normally these are IP networks but also other network technologies (X.25) can also be tested.

There are often other ways to get access to the company network, such as dial-in access using a phone and a modem. Employees on the road but also systems support personnel for 24-hour support purposes can use this. Another example is a backup connection for a leased line. All these dial-in access points can be used by hackers and can be part of a test. A specific test that can be used is "War Dialing" in which a range of phone numbers is tested for modem presence. Wireless access (WiFi or 802.11.) is also very popular. Because wireless access can also be used from outside the building this has to be well protected. A specific type of penetration test that focuses on wireless access is called "War Driving". It got its name from the practice of actually driving around big cities with a laptop, searching for unprotected access points.
